Abstract <p>The error in machining disks that results from residual stress in the surface layer is investigated. A method is proposed for calculating the residual stress, so that it may be taken into account in assessing the accuracy of disk manufacture. The mechanism by which residual stress is formed in machining disks is established.</p>
