Abstract <p>A comprehensive quality index is proposed for a vertical honing machine, taking account of the labor intensity, energy expenditure, and consumption of materials in finishing the cylinder liners for an internal combustion engine. Using this index, it may be shown that the Russian SS740 CNC machine tool or the Chinese 3MB9817 machine tool without computer numerical control (CNC) is suitable for this purpose.</p>
