Interannual Variability of the South Pacific Upper 1000-m Layer Salinity Field under Modern Global Warming

Using climate datasets of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, USA), as well as the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis of precipitation and evaporation of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts, trends and regional features of changes in salinity and salt content in the extratropical zone of the South Pacific in 2000–2022 were determined. Over most of the water area, some statistically significant positive salinity trends were identified in the surface layer. The greatest negative trends were revealed in subpolar areas of the region’s southeastern part. Below the level of 200 m, the sign of the trend reverses, which is reflected in the characteristics of salt content of the intermediate and deep layers. These changes are associated with the characteristics of atmospheric circulation, the moistening regime of the ocean surface, and the meltwater flow from the Antarctic ice shelves under conditions of ongoing warming.
