Abstract <p>The number and enzymatic activity of microorganisms in the soils from the territory of the pesticide storage base at the Zardob district (Azerbaijan) have been studied. The soils of the pesticide storage base are heavily polluted, and the content of pesticides (including DDT) exceeds the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) by tens to hundreds of times. Microbiological studies of soil samples show that, in contrast to unpolluted soil, all soil samples contaminated with pesticides are characterized by reduced number of microorganisms and their enzymatic activity, which indicate the negative impact of pesticide contamination on the structure and activity of soil microbiocenosis and limited assimilation and low recovery potentials of these soils in relation to pollutants.</p>
