Optimization of Agricultural Production on Combined Irrigated and Rain-Fed Lands

Abstract

Irrigation is characterized by a high potential for agriculture development; however, the combination of production on rain-fed and irrigated lands is often necessary. Land resources undergo water and wind erosion and pollution. The purpose of this research is to develop a parametric programming model with interval characteristics for optimal combination of agricultural production on irrigated and nonirrigated lands. The developed parametric programming model enables us to optimize the use of land resources to produce products with maximal profit depending on the interval variability and dynamics of characteristics of crop and livestock production. The modeling result is represented by a set of optimal solutions, and those that correspond to the smallest, median, and largest maximal profit are selected among them, taking into account erosion losses and technogenic impacts as well as the dynamics of characteristics. Application of the model for an agricultural enterprise in the region specialized in the production of crop and livestock products enables the evaluation of production plans for 2024 and 2026 for different operational conditions. The difference between the upper and lower estimates of the maximal profit may reach 11.6–12.6% relative to the median. Damage caused by erosion and man-made processes, relative to profit, is 16.4–16.7% by median. The developed model enables the authors to obtain different solutions using the method of statistical tests to select the most appropriate ones, with the consideration of damage from erosion and soil and water pollution in particular. The calculated values do not contradict real data but may be used to improve production planning under different environmental conditions.
