Spectral Mode Selection in a Wide-Aperture Vertical-Cavity Diode Laser

Abstract
A calculation method is developed for the cavity of a new type of diode laser with a scalable optical output beam aperture. In a vertical cavity where a surface diffraction grating serves as one of the mirrors, only a single mode can be generated in the entire spectral gain band. Using a typical InGaAs/AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure designed for operation in the 0.98 µm spectral range as an example, the cavity of this type of laser is calculated, its mode parameters, and their effective gains are determined.
