Abstract <p>The rhombohedral (R3) phase of molybdenum disulfide (MoS<sub>2</sub>) is synthesized from elemental components at high temperatures and pressures. The crystal structure and lattice constants are determined by full-profile X-ray diffraction analysis of the synthesized powder. Scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis confirms the formation of layered crystals with the elemental composition of Mo and S in the ratio of 1 : 2. Luminescence spectra of the 3R-MoS<sub>2</sub> bilayer transferred onto a SiO<sub>2</sub>/Si substrate demonstrate narrow emission lines characteristic of low-defect materials.</p>
