Production of Shaped Pipes of Corrosion-Resistant Steels Using Continuous Pipe Electric Welding Mills

Non-circular pipes are produced by shaping of a round straight-seam pipe to a specified size using a continuous pipe electric welding machine. This method is more technologically advanced than the welding of edges of a shaped product produced in a roll forming machine. Shaped pipes that comply with ASTM A554 requirements are in demand in the domestic market. It is hard from the viewpoint of technology to ensure an effective corner radius of no more than 5.6 mm and flange concavity/convexity within ±0.76 mm. To successfully implement this type of production using an electric welding mill designed for round pipe production, an intensive profiling technology was developed for the driven horizontal and non-driven vertical stands. The computer simulations of the profiling process were performed using Marc Mentat 2021 with a portion of the rolling tool in the arc welding unit sizing group being replaced. A pilot batch of pipes was produced in accordance with ASTM A554 requirements during the pilot rolling.
