The series of articles devoted to the topic of “Diagnostics of fatigue failures of internal combustion engine crankshafts” is divided into three parts: signs and mechanism of fatigue failures of metals, general information on crankshafts; metallurgical defects—the source of fatigue failures of internal combustion engine crankshafts; production (technological) defects—the source of fatigue failures of internal combustion engine crankshafts. This article is the first in the series describing the nature and mechanism of parts fatigue failures, their nature and types. The article provides general information on crankshafts, their operation and the nature of stresses arising in them.
