Studies on the Corrosive Activity of Carbon Dioxide Environments with Respect to Pipelines and the Protective Efficiency of Corrosion Inhibitors

Two testing methods have been used for to simulate the effect of operating environments containing CO2 exerted on the internal surface of gas pipelines. The first method involves bubbling CO2 through an aqueous phase to simulate a permanent impact of the liquid when exposed to different temperatures. The second testing method is implemented with the use of a specially designed test stand under a variable impact of an aqueous environment on steel samples. The cells used in the stand make it possible to create and take into account the effect of of CO2 partial pressure, temperature and mineralization of the aqueous phase. The effect of the resulting corrosion products and their role in the onset and development of local corrosion defects characteristic of carbon dioxide environments are assessed. The protective effect of three corrosion inhibitors under the conditions of carbon dioxide corrosion is studied.
