Reducing Surface Defects of Continuously Cast 13Cr Steel Billets Caused By “Longitudinal Scabs”

Abstract
The article is dedicated to the problem of continuous casting of martensitic 13Cr steel into round billets with a diameter of 190–260 mm. Surface defects such as “scabs” and “longitudinal cracks along scabs” occur on the billet during casting. The causes of these defects have been identified during the research. A new mixture for casting 13Cr steel has been developed. Based on the calculation results, an optimum profile of the working surface of the mold tube has been developed for the conditions of AO “VTZ” continuous casting plant. The work carried out has allowed improving the surface quality of round cast billets with a diameter of 190–260 mm.
