Application of Multivariate Statistical Analysis to a Study of the Relationship between the Granulometric Characteristics of Bottom Sediments and Facies Conditions of Their Accumulation (A Case Study of the Chaun Bay, in the East Siberian Sea)
摘要
The distribution and relationships between granulometric parameters (the percentage of size fractions, mean particle diameter, sorting coefficients, kurtosis, and skewness) of surface bottom sediments from the Chaun Bay of the East Siberian Sea have been investigated by the methods of multivariate statistical analysis. The regression-correlation and factor analyses have confirmed that the spatial variability of facies conditions is consistent with the geographical characteristics, the structure of the coastal zone of the study water area, as well as with the patterns of mechanical differentiation of sedimentary material. The relationships between fractions of sand, clay, water depth, and sorting coefficient are revealed, and the corresponding regression models have been obtained. It has been confirmed that the coastal facies are represented by well-sorted sandy sediments, which accumulate under conditions of active hydrodynamic regime and influence of tidal currents. Conversely, at a distance from the coast, with increasing depth and weakening of hydrodynamics under the influence of bottom currents, poorly sorted clayey-silty and silty-clayey sediments with sandy material are spread in the coastal-marine facies.
