Abstract <p>This work is a study of the hydrodynamical conditions that existed in the water area of Phanagoria in the second half of the 1st millennium BC, during the construction and the following operation of a large pier. Its unusual shape and size are hard to explain without taking the local settings into consideration, that is, the wave and wind patterns and the direction and intensity of currents. Models created on the basis of the modern data and paleogeographic reconstruction of the outlines and depth of the water area determined the hydrodynamic conditions of the studied water area and confirmed the practical necessity of the shape of the ancient pier.</p>
