Abstract <p>We report on a comparative study of MeV-energy multicharged ion generation efficiency from relativistically intense laser pulse interactions with small and large clusters of atomic Ar, Kr and molecular O<InlineEquation ID="IEq1"> <EquationSource Format="TEX">\({}_{2}\)</EquationSource> <!--BPhysMGU2570334Romanovskii-m1--> </InlineEquation> gases. An optimal average cluster diameter of 30 nm was identified for krypton to produce ions with MeV energies at charge states of 2–5.</p>
