Abstract

The article presents an overview of the work on mapping the Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars and its satellites, carried out at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University (SAI MSU) together with the Geography Department of MSU, GEOKHI RAS, IKI RAS, MIIGAIK, TsNIIGAiK, and the USSR Topogeodetic Service for the period from 1960 to 2024. The first map of the far side of the Moon was made with the participation of SAI MSU in 1960. The developed mapping technologies were then used in preparing the ‘‘Complete Map of the Moon’’ in 1967, 1969, 1979 years as well as other maps and globes. The creation of lunar hypsometric maps based on digital elevation models was an important step in the methodology for mapping the surface of the Moon. Later, hypsometric maps and globes were created to display the topography of Mars and its moons, Venus, and Mercury.
