Abstract <p>The Kokand region (present-day Uzbekistan) was annexed to Russia under Alexander II in the 1860s. On May 9, 1865, took place a battle, resulting in the death of the Kokand Khan and the capture of Tashkent. In 1873, at the request of the Turkestan Military District, construction of an observatory began in Tashkent. In 1874, the first astronomical instrument (a normal astrograph) was installed, and in 1875, the first observations were conducted. This year is considered the founding year of the Tashkent Observatory.</p>
