Regulating the performance of NaOH-activated slag using vitamin B3, B6, and C as bio-admixtures: a comparison study

This study proposes the use of commonly existing natural compounds, Vitamin B3 (VB3), vitamin B6 (VB6), and vitamin C (VC), as bio-admixtures to regulate the performance of alkali-activated slag (AAS). The experimental results suggested that VB3, VB6, and VC could act as retardants to prolong the setting time, plasticizers to improve the fluidity, strength enhancers to increase the compressive strength, and shrinkage reducers to reduce the autogenous shrinkage of AAS. Among them, VC exhibited the highest efficiency as a performance enhancer than VB3 and VB6 with the same dosage. Specifically, the addition of 0.3% VC extended the setting time by 223%, increased the fluidity to 18.65%, and enhanced the 28-day compressive strength by 13.7%, while reducing the 28-day autogenous shrinkage by 45.2%, compared with the blank mixture. Furthermore, by comparing the molecular structures of VB3, VB6, and VC, the mechanisms of various vitamins in influencing the performance of AAS were analyzed and revealed.Journal instruction requires a city and country for affiliations; however, city is missing in affiliation 1.
