High-temperature erosion of oxide coatings deposited by APS and hardfacing coating by SMAW

In the present work, the erosion resistance of three coatings at room temperature (RT) and at 600 °C was studied using a sandblasting-type erosion machine: Al2O3, 25% Al2O3 + 75% Cr2O3 plasma-sprayed, and a hardfacing coating deposited by welding. The ceramic coatings (Al2O3 and Al2O3 + Cr2O3) exhibited purely brittle behavior under erosion at both test temperatures. The oxide mixture (Al2O3 + Cr2O3) showed an improvement in erosion resistance at RT compared to Al2O3. At 600 °C, alumina (Al2O3) exhibited a lower erosion rate than the mixture (Al2O3 + Cr2O3), which is attributed to the adhesion of the erodent (silica sand) to the surface sample. At both temperatures, hardfacing was the coating with the highest resistance to erosion, due to its microstructure, which is similar to that of cermets, with ceramic particles bonded by a metallic alloy.
