Physicomechanical analysis and environmental profile of steel for reinforced concrete structures in Burkina Faso

Ensuring that construction materials meet standards is crucial to guarantee the safety and reliability of reinforced concrete structures. This study examines the physicomechanical properties and environmental performance of rebars used in Burkina Faso. Rebars with diameter of 8–14 mm were taken from four regular suppliers and subjected to a series of measurements and tests. An environmental profile of these rebars has been established. Results show that noncompliance rates for actual diameters and linear masses were 85% and 52%, respectively, regarding the Burkinabe standard, and 73% for linear masses regarding the European standard. Overall, 47% of bars conformed to the Burkinabe standard. Life cycle assessment highlights that the locally produced rebars can reduce environmental impacts to about 79%–98% compared with imported rebars, especially regarding global warming potential, fine particulate matter formation, and fossil resource scarcity. Chemical analysis and microstructural evaluation should be conducted to complete this analysis.
