In vitro cell viability evaluation of amorphous carbon and Fe3O4 compounds

Composite amorphous carbon and Fe3O4 compounds were synthesized from sucrose and Fe2O3 at 500, 600, and 700 °C by low-temperature pyrolysis. Transmission microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of an amorphous carbon/Fe3O4, yolk-shell composite. The results showed that the sample containing 90 wt.%+10 wt.% Fe2O3 thermally treated for 30 min had the highest rate of Fe3O4 formation and low graphitization of the amorphous carbon. This compound was chosen to study in vitro cell viability using the MTT assay to measure fibroblast cell viability after 72 h, which showed no reduction in viability at any concentration tested (100, 50, 25,12.5, 6.2, 3.1, 1.5 µg/ml). These results demonstrate the initial cell viability of the compound in healthy human cells.
