Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles by curcin from Jatropha curcas: Characterization and antibacterial activity

Jatropha curcas has been used mainly to obtain biofuels from the oil of the seeds. During the oil extraction, a residual paste is generated with a high percentage of proteins, including curcin, related to its antimicrobial effect due to its rRNA N-glycosidase activity. The present investigation focuses on characterizing gold nanoparticles with curcin (AuNPs-GS) obtained via green synthesis, using this agro-industrial waste to obtain curcin and develop a nanomaterial against Salmonella typhimurium that is one of the more important foodborne pathogens. The AuNPs-GS synthesized and their chemical, physical, and morphological properties were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, DLS, FTIR, and TEM. AuNPs-GS shows the SPR band at 526 nm, with PdI of 0.45 and ζ Potential − 18.33 mV. FTIR demonstrated the surface modification, while TEM micrographs reveal an average particle size of 17 nm. AuNPs-GS antibacterial effect had a significant action on Salmonella typhimurium after 24 h compared with curcin.
