Effect of crystallinity on permeation and quercetin release of biologic chitosan/ramon starch bioactive films

The present study evaluates the effect of the degree of crystallinity (DC) on films formulated with biological chitosan (BCh) and starch from Ramon seeds (RS) and quercetin (q) as polyphenol on their properties of the release of the active compound as well as oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability. X-ray diffraction determined the DC, and quercetin was released by kinetics with two solutions of 50 and 95% ethanol. The films of BCh and RS presented 22.45 and 59.43% of the DC, the films of mixtures of 20% (w/w) of BCh with RS and q (BChRS80-q) had 54.63%, and those of RS with BCh and q (BChRS20-q) 66.20%. It was observed that BCh and BChRS80-q films had higher CO2 permeability values. As O2 for permeability, higher values were observed for RS and BChRS20-q. Finally, a lower polyphenol release rate was observed for the BChRS20-q film for both solutions.
