Experimental electrical characterization of a graphite rod to measure change in voltage due to a UV source

Graphite is an allotropic form of the carbon, with electrical conductivity due to its crystalline structure, allowing the free movement of electrons through its arrangement. However, it’s sensitive to ionizing radiation and is studied as a thermoluminescence dosimeter. We evaluated a graphite rod placed as a resistive load in an inductor-resistance passive electronic system. The measurements were carried out in two stages with and without exposure to UV. Voltage changes produced by a UV source were measured and collected on the oscilloscope, which revealed that the material has an electrical response to UV. The Raman showed first and second order spectra characterized by bands D and G. Statistically significant differences between the samples not irradiated and irradiated were observed. Results suggest that the material is sensible to UV radiation. However, future analysis under exposure to other radiation sources, such as X -rays and gamma rays would be useful.
