摘要

SiO2-CaO-based Germanium containing mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) were synthesized using a microemulsion-assisted sol–gel method. SEM micrographs revealed the spherical morphology of both particle types (with and without Ge), while EDX results confirmed the presence of Ge in the nanoparticles. Structural analysis indicated partial crystallinity in Ge-containing MBGNs due to the presence of GeO2. Preliminary cell biology results indicated that the release of Ge ions from Ge-MBGNs significantly improved cell viability (of osteoblast-like osteosarcoma MG-63 cells) after 48 h. The initial results indicate that Ge-containing MBGNs are promising biomaterials and should be further investigated in bone tissue regeneration approaches involving biologically active ions.
