<p>Uranium dioxide has been studied for 70&#xa0;years but still has some&#xa0;poorly&#xa0;understood properties. We present our last results using neutron total-scattering methods that evidence local deviations from average structure in UO<sub>2</sub> Pair-Distribution Function (PDF). At high temperature, this deviation appears as a decreasing of the UO distance with temperature, which we interpret as a phonon-induced dynamic distortion of uranium’s local environment. At low temperature, this deviation takes place in UO<sub>2</sub> magnetic order above the magnetic transition, which is still under study.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
