Surface modification of polylactic acid films with acrylic acid plasma to modify the fibroblast viability

To increase the affinity of fibroblast cells on PLA, in the present work the surface modification of this polymer was carried out by means of AA plasma treatments. To achieve this, PLA films were treated varying the power (20, 30 and 40 W) and time (2.5 and 5 min). The surface was monitored by different analytical techniques. The results indicated that the AA was grafted onto the PLA films surface and that both variables, the power and the treatment time increased the wettability of the films by reducing their water contact angles. XPS and AFM data confirms the change on the surface chemistry and an increase on the roughness of PLA films. Both (power and time) parameters influenced on the surface properties, although the treatment time had the strongest impact on outcomes. On contrary, power and time do not show clear effects on the fibroblast cell viability.
