Enhancement of antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of Al-based quasicrystals through silver incorporation

This study explored the antibacterial capabilities and cytotoxicity of Al–Cu–Fe–Ag quasicrystals (QC–Ag). QC–Ag powders with varying Ag at% were leached in NaOH solution, which resulted in dissolution of surface Al and enriching it with Cu, Fe, and Ag and thus improved the antimicrobial properties. Overall, the results indicated that B. endophyticus, E. aerogenes, and S. typhi were more responsive to the leached QC–Ag surfaces. The largest average diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ) was measured upto 19.5 mm and 18 mm in case of QC–Ag with 1at% Ag after 2 h leaching for S. typhi and B. endophyticus. Additionally, MTT tests indicated that cell viability exceeded 100% for QC–Ag samples. The study concluded that QC–Ag exhibit exceptional cell viability and antimicrobial properties in the presence of Cu and Ag atoms at QC surface, making them highly suitable for medical applications requiring biocompatibility and sterility.
