<p>Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are transforming online information retrieval and challenging the dominant role of traditional search engines. This development raises new challenges for organizations and content providers regarding digital visibility. This study examines how users evaluate traditional search engines and generative AI tools for informational search tasks and discusses the implications for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). The study is based on an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) incorporating trust, satisfaction, perceived enjoyment, and information evaluation. Data were collected through a quantitative online survey of 266 participants. The results show that traditional search engines are rated significantly higher in terms of perceived usefulness, ease of use, trust in information, and intention to use. In contrast, generative AI tools achieve higher ratings for perceived enjoyment and are associated with lower levels of information overload and fewer irrelevant results. At the same time, AI-generated information is more frequently verified using additional sources. No significant differences are found regarding trust in the technology itself, satisfaction, or overall attitude toward use. <i>Regression analyses further reveal that the drivers of technology acceptance differ between the two approaches.</i> The findings do not support the assumption that generative AI will replace traditional search engines in the short term. Instead, they indicate a complementary use of both technologies. For practitioners, the results highlight the need to optimize digital content for both conventional search engines and AI-based answer systems. The study provides empirical evidence on user acceptance of both technologies and derives practical implications for future digital visibility strategies.</p>
