Connected mobility faces the challenge of developing innovative and sustainable business models that align with the demands of a data-driven economy and the goals of sustainable resource consumption. This paper introduces the Fair-Wear Pricing Model (FWPM), a leasing model that calculates leasing rates based on the actual wear and tear of a product. By integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and real-time data analysis, the FWPM enables dynamically setting the leasing rate, fostering transparency and fairness for consumers while promoting sustainable usage behavior. The article develops the FWPM within the framework of a design-oriented research approach (design science research) and transfers central principles of the pay-per-stress model (PPS) from the B2B sector to the B2C context. The paper discusses the theoretical foundations of the FWPM, differentiates it from existing approaches such as Pay-per-Use, and analyzes its benefits for stakeholders, including consumers, lessors, and manufacturers. We illustrate the practical applicability of the model through a use case in vehicle leasing, with a particular focus on encouraging resource-conscious behavior and optimizing product life cycles. In this way, we illustrate how the FWPM could emerge as a promising concept for connected mobility and beyond, contributing to the sustainable use of resources and opening new perspectives for data-driven business models in a digitized and resource-conscious society.
