<p>Mobility is a&#xa0;basic human need and a&#xa0;prerequisite for sustainable, modern societies. Future public passenger mobility by road and rail must make a&#xa0;significant contribution to ecologically sustainable travel and achieve climate-related goals (in particular, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions). As a&#xa0;result, society’s expectations of service providers in public local and long-distance passenger transport are increasing (e.g. reporting). At the same time, software systems are playing an increasingly important role to establish a&#xa0;future-oriented, effective and efficient transport services. Accordingly, enterprise software in passenger transport can make essential contributions to sustainable mobility on two levels: Firstly, it can help to improve the processes and results of planning, organization and implementation. Secondly, software itself can become ‘greener’ by successively optimizing its own use of resources. For the second level, this article shows the practical potential benefits of ‘Green IT’ in the context of personal mobility, the challenges involved in achieving this potential and the fields of action and solutions that exist. The practice-oriented article summarizes results and experiences from digitization projects over the past years. It also shows insights for sustainability strategy and reporting in the context of networked mobility.</p>
