This contribution presents a newly developed approach for the sustainable development of software solutions aimed at the digitalization of trades in the construction industry, considering economic aspects to promote technology-based business model innovations for these trades. The trades in the construction industry are under significant innovation pressure, particularly due to digitalization, which increasingly includes the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a central element. However, despite international successes in increasing efficiency and reducing costs, the adoption of BIM in Germany remains low, with only 10% of construction projects utilizing it. This is primarily due to the complex implementation processes, existing technical media discontinuities, and a lack of integration into the business models of these trades from a strategic perspective. To address these challenges, the aim is to develop software solutions that facilitate the application of BIM for the trades in the construction industry. An integrative approach is being pursued, which considers the business models of the trades, product development, and the service ecosystem of the developed software solutions. This method is intended to ensure that the software solutions developed can be applied sustainably and long-term in the construction industry.
