Effects of Marula (Sclerocarya birrea) oil and fulvic acid blend in broiler diets on growth performance, protein utilisation and hematobiochemical parameters

The current study was conducted to determine the effects of Sclerocarya birrea oil extracts and fulvic acid inclusion in broiler diets on growth performance, protein utilisation efficiency and hematobiochemical parameters. Three hundred and twenty unsexed Cobb 500 broiler chickens were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments following a complete randomised design. Control diet contained antibiotic Olaquindox and dietary treatment CFF contained broiler mash diet containing 2g Fulvic acid/kg feed without antibiotic. Dietary treatment CFFM had 1.4g Fulvic Acid/ kg feed and 0.6g Marula Oil/kg feed without antibiotic and dietary treatment CFM contained 2g Marula Oil/kg feed without antibiotic. Each treatment was replicated 4 times with each pen holding 10 birds as the experimental unit giving 16 cages. The feeding trial was conducted over three feeding phases: starter phase (1-14d), grower phase (15– 28d) and finisher phase (29 – 42d). Dietary treatments significantly (P <0.05) influenced all the growth performance parameters and protein utilisation in broiler chickens. Blood hematobiochemical parameters were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the inclusion of marula oil, fulvic acid and their blend. The physical and chemical properties of marula oil, fulvic acid and their complementary effects on broiler growth performance, haematology, serum biochemistry, liver and digestive enzyme function give makes them potential alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. The use and application of these alternatives in broiler nutrition promote efficient production and welfare.
