Introduction <p>Improvement in the speech recognition scores due to the language mismatch between target and masker is known as Linguistic release of Masking (LRM). LRM is less explored in children, especially in the Indian scenario.</p> Aim <p>This study assessed if school going children and adults benefited from a language mismatch between target and masker speech for word recognition in a 2-talker. Effect of various signal to noise ratio (SNR)s on the linguistic release of masking was also studied.</p> Method <p>Three different age groups (6 to 9years; 10 to 15 years &amp; young adults) each with ‘15’ native Kannada speakers were taken. All the participants were subjected to Kannada PB word recognition task in the presence of two-talker Kannada babble and two-talker Hindi babble at 0 dB SNR, -5 dB SNR and − 10 dB SNR. Stimulus was presented at comfortable listening levels of the participants. Linguistic masking release (LRM) was calculated by subtracting percentage of speech identification score (SIS) in the presence of Kannada babble from the SIS in the presence of Hindi babble.</p> Results <p>LRM scores for the 6 to 9 years children were significantly greater than that of adults and 10-to-15-year individuals at 0 dB SNR and − 10 dB SNR. At -5 dB SNR maximum LRM was obtained for participants of 10-to-15-year age group. LRM was highest at -10 dB in all three age groups.</p> Conclusion <p>Children are able to take advantage of linguistic differences between Kannada and Hindi speech maskers to a greater degree than adults. Lesser exposure of the non-native babble language in children when compared to adults could be one of the reasons for a greater linguistic masking release in children. Linguistic release from masking was the greatest at the poorest SNR. Further, the effects of noise were more deleterious in the younger age group.</p>
