Background <p>Hyperacusis, a condition characterized by an increased sensitivity to sound, has an estimated prevalence of 9%-15% and leads to impaired social, emotional and attentional functioning. This study explores an intervention method designed to minimize hyperacusis.</p> Purpose <p>The aim of this study is to address the following research questions, can hyperacusis symptoms be improved through systematically guided exposure to annoying sounds under experimental controlled conditions and whether temporal resolution can be improved with auditory training.</p> Methods <p>The study involved an initial interview, the administration of the Khalfa Hyperacusis questionnaire, guided exposure to annoying sounds, and pre- and post-training evaluation of temporal resolution using the Gaps- In-Noise (GIN) test. The sample was composed of 33 adults that were split into an experimental hyperacusis group and a control one based on their score at Kalfa's Hyperacusis questionnaire (cut off 16).</p> Results <p>The experimental group showed significant improvement in hyperacusis discomfort (<i>p</i> = 0.001) and temporal resolution for both the right (<i>p</i> = 0.001) and left ear (<i>p</i> = 0.003). The effect size was medium to large (0.7).</p> Conclusion <p>Auditory training appears to benefit individuals with hyperacusis, both in terms of symptomatology and temporal resolution.</p>
