Evaluation of the effect of proton pump inhibitors on swallowing impairment symptoms after thyroidectomy
摘要
Treating patients with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has been proposed to be effective in reducing pharyngeal pain as well as dysphagia reported by patients after thyroid surgery.
ObjectivesThis work aims at evaluating the effect of administration of PPIs on swallowing impairment symptoms after traditional thyroidectomy.
MethodsThis prospective randomized controlled study included 30 patients, with an age range between 18 and 60 years, both genders, undergoing thyroid surgery for various indications, and able to complete swallowing impairment score (SIS) questionnaire. Study population was divided into treatment and control groups. Treatment group patients received oral PPIs 1 week preoperative and continued to 2 weeks postoperative.
ResultsAlways feeling a throat obstacle during swallowing and occasionally having some difficulties in swallowing fluids were significantly greater within the treatment group as opposed to the control group (P = 0.016). Total of SIS the 1st day postoperative was insignificantly different between both groups. Occasionally, having some difficulties in swallowing fluids was significantly greater within the treatment group as opposed to the control group (P = 0.007). Total of SIS the 1st day postoperative exhibited a significant reduction within the treatment group as opposed to the control group (P < 0.001). Total of SIS after 1st week postoperative exhibited highly significant variation among both groups.
ConclusionsPeri-operative use of PPIs could alleviate the swallowing disorders after thyroid surgery. Cases using PPIs exhibited reduced pain and swallowing impairment during the first week after thyroid surgery, when compared to the control group.
