<p>Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven paraphrasing tools have gained popularity among researchers, but there are ethical limitations to their use in academic publishing. When such tools are employed but their use is not transparently declared by authors, then this amounts to an ethical infraction. Such tools, due to their imperfections, might create incorrect representations of jargon, referred to as ‘tortured phrases’. In this letter, seven papers with ‘tortured phrases’ in AI-related literature, or AI-specific ‘tortured phrases’, are exemplified.</p>
