Effect of omega-3 supplementation on nutritional status and oxidative stress in children and adolescents with end stage renal disease on regular hemodialysis: a randomized clinical trial

ObjectivesThis study assessed omega-3 supplementation on oxidative stress and nutritional markers in pediatric end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.
MethodsThis randomized, placebo-controlled trial involved 60 end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis. The participants were assigned randomly into two groups: In addition to conservative management, the study group received 1 g/day of omega-3 supplements, while the control group received an oral placebo for 6 months. Anthropometric measurements, and laboratory investigations including oxidative stress markers (glutathione peroxidase and human thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) were assessed at the start point and after 6 months.
ResultsFollowing 6 months of omega-3 supplementation, a decrease in serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and C-reactive protein were noted in the study group. Glutathione peroxidase levels considerably increased (p < 0.002) and serum thiobarbituric acid reactive substances significantly decreased (p < 0.001) following omega-3 treatment.
ConclusionOmega-3 supplementation can be a beneficial complementary therapy combined with conservative management that can reduce oxidative stress markers in pediatric end-stage renal disease patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.
