Introduction <p>VSD is the most common congenital cardiac malformations<Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">.</Emphasis> Nutrition is crucial in the treatment of chronic illness. It is one of the most important factors affecting patients’ recovery after surgery and lowering the risk of infection in children with congenital heart disease.</p> Methods <p>It is a cohort study including 100 infants aged 0–6&#xa0;months old diagnosed with VSD, who were recruited from Pediatric Cardiology Department at Cairo University Specialized ChildrenHospital (14 infants had large VSD were excluded as they could not adhere to the outpatient nutrition regimen).</p> <p>Infants were assessed by thorough cardiac and nutritional history. Full clinical examination including anthropometric measurements, and their myocardial function was assessed by tissue Doppler echocardiography before and after our high caloric nutritional intervention for 3&#xa0;months duration.</p> Results <p>The study revealed a significant reduction of VSD size and pulmonary artery pressure, improvement of both left and right ventricular systolic and diastolic function as well as a significant improvement of anthropometric measurements.</p> Conclusion <p>Improvement of the quantitative and qualitative nutritional regimen received by VSD infants has a great positive effect on their cardiac function, VSD size, pulmonary artery pressure as well as their growth parameters (weight and length for age, BMI, and head circumference) that will surely have a great effect on their postoperative recovery.</p>

Interventional nutritional rehabilitation regimen impact on myocardial function indices in infants with interventricular septal defect

Introduction

VSD is the most common congenital cardiac malformations. Nutrition is crucial in the treatment of chronic illness. It is one of the most important factors affecting patients’ recovery after surgery and lowering the risk of infection in children with congenital heart disease.

Methods

It is a cohort study including 100 infants aged 0–6 months old diagnosed with VSD, who were recruited from Pediatric Cardiology Department at Cairo University Specialized ChildrenHospital (14 infants had large VSD were excluded as they could not adhere to the outpatient nutrition regimen).
