Background <p>Magerl type C lumbar fractures represent one of the most severe spinal injuries with the poorest prognosis, due to the increased risk of associated vascular-nervous lesions. Profuse rectal discharge is a possible telltale sign, but rarely reported in the literature.</p> Case presentation <p>We report a 30-year-old patient with no medical history, who consulted us for excessive rectal bleeding following trauma to the lumbar spine due to ceiling collapse. Spinal imaging revealed a Magerl C-type dislocation fracture, and management was multidisciplinary.</p> Conclusions <p>Magerl C fractures are serious because of the risk of associated vascular and nerve damage. They rarely manifest as profuse rectal discharge, which is probably secondary to injury to the large pelvic vessels.</p>

Background

Magerl type C lumbar fractures represent one of the most severe spinal injuries with the poorest prognosis, due to the increased risk of associated vascular-nervous lesions. Profuse rectal discharge is a possible telltale sign, but rarely reported in the literature.

Case presentation

We report a 30-year-old patient with no medical history, who consulted us for excessive rectal bleeding following trauma to the lumbar spine due to ceiling collapse. Spinal imaging revealed a Magerl C-type dislocation fracture, and management was multidisciplinary.
