Suicidality and its relation to psychological resilience and serum BDNF in major depressive disorder patients
摘要
It is expected that half of individuals who die by suicide meet the criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD). Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has an essential role on central neurogenesis. Resilience is the capability of person to overcome stress. An association has been observed between resilience, BDNF level and suicide in depressed cases. This study was a cross sectional/case control study. Participants were 90 cases, divided into three groups: Group 1 (30 MDD cases with suicidal risk), Group 2 (30 cases without suicidal risk) and group 3 (30 healthy controls). Depression severity, resilience and suicide severity have been evaluated utilizing standardized scales. Serum BDNF levels have been obtained.
ResultsThis study reported a statistical significant negative correlation among depression severity and both BDNF level and resilience, which are inversely related to each other. There is a statistical significant negative correlation among depression severity and resilience among suicidal MDD cases, which are inversely related to each other.
ConclusionBDNF level and resilience are significantly reduced in major depressive disorder cases in comparison with healthy controls and reduced in suicidal depressed cases in comparison with non-suicidal cases and can be considered as potential biomarkers for suicide.
