Background and objective <p>Gentamicin (GEN) exact its nephrotoxicity via oxidative stress and apoptosis of renal tubular cells. <i>Artocarpus heterophyllus</i> (AAH) have been known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal potentials. Therefore, the potential effect of the AAH on gentamicin-induced Nephrotoxicity was investigated.</p> Materials and methods <p>Twenty adults female Wistar rats were used for this in vivo study (housed in 4 separate plastic cages). GEN (100&#xa0;mg/kg) via (i.p.) for one week was administered to groups 2, 3 and 4. Thereafter, a graded dosage of AAH (100&#xa0;mg/kg/day and 150&#xa0;mg/kg/day) was (p.o.) given to group 3 and 4 for 21&#xa0;days respectively. At the end of the study, comparisons of some markers of renal functions, antioxidant status, Inflammatory and apoptotic markers were made between the control, GEN and AAH- treated groups at <i>p</i> &lt; 0.05.</p> Results <p>Gentamicin caused a significant increase (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) in Creatinine, Urea, KIM 1, Cystatin C, Bilirubin, Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, MDA, TNFα, Interleukin-1b, Caspase-3, Bax as well as a significant decrease (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) in Bcl2, TG, catalase, Gpx, SOD, GSH level. AAH significantly reduced creatinine, urea, and inflammatory markers while restoring antioxidant enzyme levels. There was an appreciable difference in the histoarchitecture of the liver of AAI pre-treated groups compared to the GEN.</p> Conclusion <p>Thus, the aqueous extract of <i>Artocarpus heterophyllus</i> mitigate the nephrotoxic effect of gentamicin by modulating markers of renal function, oxidative stress and inflammation.</p>
