Effect of dietary supplementation with raw and boiled ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) rhizome on biochemical parameters of rats fed high cholesterol diet

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) has been traditionally utilized in herbal medicine for its potential anti-obesity effects worldwide.
AimThis study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of diets supplemented with raw ginger (RG) and boiled ginger (BG) at 2% and 4% concentrations on hyperlipidemia in high cholesterol diet (HCD)-induced obesity in rats.
MethodsSeven groups of ten rats each were used: a healthy control group on a basal diet, an obese untreated group on HCD, a group treated with the reference drug orlistat (10 mg/kg BW/day), and four groups fed HCD supplemented with either 2% or 4% RG or BG for 24 weeks. Blood and liver samples were collected post-euthanasia for biochemical analyses.
ResultsBoth RG and BG supplementation significantly enhanced total antioxidant capacity and enzyme activities, including reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase (P < 0.05), while reducing liver marker enzyme activities, TBARS, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol. mRNA expressions of fatty acid synthase and other lipid-regulatory genes were down-regulated, whereas carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 and apolipoprotein A1 were up-regulated in ginger-treated groups. Histological analysis indicated improved liver architecture in treated groups, with 4% BG demonstrating the most pronounced effects.
ConclusionBoiled ginger, particularly at a 4% inclusion rate, is more effective than raw ginger in mitigating hyperlipidemia associated with a high-cholesterol diet, highlighting its potential as a dietary intervention for managing obesity-related metabolic disorders.
