Background <p>The association between famine exposure and hyperuricemia has been explored, however, the results remain inconsistent and controversial. The aim of this study was to provide comprehensive evidence of the correlation between famine exposure and later risk of hyperuricemia.</p> Methods <p>Four electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched for studies published from their inception until March 2024, without restrictions. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and weight mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to evaluate the effect value.</p> Results <p>In this meta-analysis, a total of 17 studies with 71,695 participants were included. The pooled results revealed that the risk of hyperuricemia in famine exposed individuals was higher than that in individuals not exposed to famine (OR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.43). Moreover, stratified analysis revealed that a sample size over 2000 (OR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.49), female sex (OR = 1.65; 95% CI: 1.32, 1.98), an individual body mass index (BMI) greater than 24 (OR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.19), and childhood exposure to famine (OR = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.89) were associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia in adulthood. Further analysis found that uric acid levels were elevated in the exposure group (WMD = 7.18, 95% CI: 2.44, 11.91). However, the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was reduced (WMD=-7.84, 95% CI: -10.02, -5.66).</p> Conclusion <p>Famine exposure during early life was correlated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia in adulthood. This association was more pronounced in studies with a large sample size, female, individuals with a BMI greater than 24&#xa0;kg/m<sup>2</sup>, and childhood exposed to famine. Moreover, this increased risk may result from elevated uric acid levels or impaired renal function.</p>

Background
