Ground motion characteristics of the 2022 Mw 5.9 Keng Tung earthquake in the northern Sunda Block

On July 21, 2022, a shallow Mw 5.9 Keng Tung earthquake struck eastern Myanmar, within the northern margin of the Sunda Plate. The earthquake was widely felt across eastern Myanmar, southern Yunnan (China), northern Thailand, Vietnam, and even in the outskirts of Bangkok, ~ 800 km from the epicenter. To characterize the ground motion of this moderate earthquake, we collected earthquake felt reports from social media and internet news to assess the mainshock’s seismic intensity. We also include the instrumental records to estimate the earthquake’s peak ground motions. The data collected from the mainland Southeast Asian community show good agreement with the peak ground motion derived from the instrumental records. Both results suggest an elongated macroseismic distribution likely caused by the southwestward rupture directivity of the mainshock. We find that the Intensity Prediction Equation (IPE) developed for Central Asia and the Himalayas best explains our community-based ground motion observations. The instrumental records, can be fitted by several Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) developed for active shallow crustal regions. These results suggest that the ground motion behavior of the northern Sunda Block is similar to that of an active shallow crustal region, even though part of its crust comprises Paleozoic and Pre-Paleozoic continental fragments. Our results provide a basis for characterizing ground-motion behavior in mainland Southeast Asia, aiding the selection of appropriate IPEs and GMPEs for future seismic hazard analyses.
