Comparison of the tsunamis following the 2025 and 1952 Kamchatka Earthquakes, Russia: field observations along the Japanese coast

On July 30, 2025 (Japan Standard Time), a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, likely a recurrence of the 1952 event, occurred along the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench near the Kamchatka Peninsula, generating a trans-Pacific tsunami. In this study, tide gauge records and tsunami trace heights—including inundation and run-up heights—were collected along the Japanese coastline for the 2025 event and compared with those from the 1952 event to assess their correspondence and differences. The tide gauge records revealed a strong similarity between the two tsunamis along the Hokkaido and Tohoku coasts in terms of arrival time, amplitude, and phase. Both events reached their maximum amplitudes during later waves rather than the initial arrivals. The 1952 tsunami was consistently and slightly larger than the 2025 tsunami from the primary wave onward and exhibited a marginally longer dominant period. These observations indicate that the 2025 and 1952 earthquakes possessed comparable source characteristics, although the 1952 event may have involved a greater seismic moment and a larger rupture area. Run-up heights measured during the 2025 field survey were substantially affected by wind-generated waves. After correction for these effects, the adjusted run-up heights closely matched the inundation heights and maximum water surface elevations recorded at nearby tide gauges, and ports, exhibiting alongshore variation. Although the limited number of 1952 survey sites precludes a definitive comparison, the available evidence suggested that the 1952 tsunami likely displayed similar spatial variability along the coast.
