The transformation of intellectual capital into a competitive advantage in banks: conditional effects of innovation and big data capabilities
摘要
This study examines the moderator effect of innovation performance and big data usage on the effect of intellectual capital (human capital, structural and relational capital) usage on competitive advantage in the Turkish banking sector. The study used 441 survey data applied to bank employees in seven regions of Turkey and weighted according to population. The data was analyzed with structural equation modeling. The results show that intellectual capital components, innovation performance, and big data usage explain 68% of banks’ competitive advantage. According to standardized regression weights, a one-unit change in human capital affects competitive advantage by 0.167, while a one-unit change in relational capital affects competitive advantage by 0.243. In addition, it was observed that a one-unit change in innovation performance affected the competitive advantage by 0.515 and a one-unit change in big data usage affected the innovation performance by 0.480. Only innovation performance acts as a significant moderator in the relationship between structural capital and competitive advantage. Contrary to expectations, the fact that innovation performance does not moderate the relationship between human capital and competitive advantage may stem from the inadequacy of bank employees in using big data. Although this study is important in the field, it could technically be conducted as a qualitative study with senior managers as a question-and-answer study instead of being based on a survey. In addition, secondary data taken from the balance sheets and tables of banks could have been used instead of primary data in the study. Since this study was conducted on a sample consisting of participants working in the Turkish banking sector of Turkey, a developing country, the results may differ in different countries with different development levels. This study is the first to address the moderating effect of innovation performance and big data use on the impact of intellectual capital and its subcomponents on competitive advantage in the banking sector.
