<p>A Middle Triassic gastropod fauna from the San Salvatore Dolomite (Anisian/Ladinian boundary, Southern Alps) is here described in detail for the first time. The material was collected from the type locality Monte San Salvatore (Southern Switzerland, Canton Ticino) and from the Rasa Valley (Varese, Lombardy, Northern Italy); the latter was particularly rich in gastropods. The San Salvatore Dolomite represents a Middle Triassic carbonate platform, close to the time equivalent, usually anoxic basin of the well known Besano Formation (Monte San Giorgio), where gastropods are extremely rare. The taxonomic diversity of the San Salvatore Dolomite is here represented by 39 species, among them caenogastropods are dominant. Patellogastropods are rare and contain endemic species. Vetigastropods and basal taxa are highly diversified but often represented by one specimen per species only. Neritimorphs, despite the abundant specimens at hand, show a lower species richness. Heterobranchs are absent. The Paleozoic genera <i>Planotectus</i> and <i>Knightinella</i> are documented for the first time in the Middle Triassic with two new species: <i>Planotectus chiusarellae</i> sp. nov. and <i>Knightinella</i>? <i>olonae</i> sp. nov. Open nomenclature was used for some species, among them some can be new. Some shells show also traces of the original pigmentation.</p>
