The synergy between Shilajatu (Asphaltum punjabinum) and Daruharidra (Berberis aristata DC.), curtails the glycaemic indicators and alleviates the symptoms of type 2 diabetes: a case report
摘要
Ayurveda texts has mentioned a disorder known as Prameha, which parallels type 2 diabetes mellitus. Globally, prevalence of diabetes within the adult demography is projected to surge to 12.2% (783.2 million adults) by 2045. Additionally, managing it with current conventional drugs has been associated with side effects. This situation demands the urgent need of a therapeutic agent that can optimize diabetes management with minimal or no side effects. This case report presents a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus, who was treated using a novel Ayurvedic formulation, which is a combination of Shilajatu (Asphaltum punjabinum) and decoction of Daruharidra (Berberis aristate DC.), along with dietary and lifestyle modifications.
Case presentationA 40-year-old North Indian male patient of thin build with no history of alcohol consumption or smoking presented to the outpatient department of the All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi, India. The patient reported complaints of excessive fatigue, excessive thirst, dryness of the mouth, increased appetite, and a burning sensation in both upper and lower limbs, accompanied by intermittent episodes of numbness over the past 3 months. Additionally, patient reported increased frequency of micturition with turbidity in the urine. The patient was diagnosed and treated for 3 months as a case of Prameha. The patient was prescribed Shilajatu Darvi Yoga, 5 mL twice a day with warm water, empty stomach for 3 months. The intervention significantly improves clinical symptoms and biochemical parameters, such as HbA1c (12.8 to 7.3), fasting blood sugar (224 to 122), and postprandial blood sugar (437 to 149), while also enhancing quality of life significantly.
ConclusionThis study underscores the potential of Ayurvedic novel intervention in managing metabolic disorders and infers that Shilajatu Darvi Yoga can be used in the optimal management of type 2 diabetes mellitus with no reported side effects. The study also highlights the its significant impact on improving quality of life. However, this study is limited to a single case, which may restrict its generalizability. Therefore, randomized controlled trials are needed to support the findings and establish the efficacy.
