摘要

Introduction

Diarrhea is one of the world’s major causes of child mortality and morbidity, even though it has preventive solutions. Earlier studies have addressed diarrhea management at home instead of focusing on preventative measures. Hence, this study aimed to assess diarrhea prevention practice and identify factors associated with it among caregivers of children under five in Jinka town, Ethiopia, in 2024.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from November 1 to 30, 2024, in Jinka town. The study included 421 participants selected through a simple random sampling technique. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using pre-tested structured questionnaires to collect data. The data was collected by the Kobo tool and then exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Both multivariable and bivariate logistic regression analyses were used. Bivariate variables with a p-value of less than 0.25 were added to the multivariable logistic regression at a 95% confidence interval, and a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to indicate a significant association.

Results

The diarrhea prevention practice carried out by caregivers was 56.7% in the study area. Factors significantly associated with diarrhea prevention practice were timely initiation of complementary feeding (AOR = 4.4; 95% CI: 1.81 to 10.6), presence of hand washing facilities near the toilet (AOR = 2; 95% CI: 1.04 to 3.58), living in a home with a cement floor (AOR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.17 to 4.27), and disposing of refuse by burning (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.15 to 5.86).

Conclusion

More than half of the study participants demonstrate good practices in diarrhea prevention. The practice of diarrhea prevention was significantly associated with complementary feeding, hand washingfacilities proximal to the toilet, type of floor, and refuse disposal method. Hence, the health professionals enhance caregivers’ education on appropriate complementary feeding and emphasize the importance of establishing and maintaining hand washing facilities near toilets to improve diarrhea prevention efforts.
