Objective <p>To investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults and provide scientific evidence for the prevention of sarcopenia.</p> Methods <p>This cross-sectional study included 5016 community-dwelling older adults (mean age, 71.0 ± 5.6 years). Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 Consensus. A nutritional risk assessment was also conducted. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors associated with sarcopenia.</p> Results <p>Our study comprised 5016 participants (71.0 ± 5.6 years). Sarcopenia prevalence was 11.8%, showing no gender disparity but a strong positive association with age (8.0%, 12.9%, and 27.2% in the 60–69, 70–79, and ≥ 80-year groups, respectively). After adjustment for population composition, the prevalence was 12.5%. The survey results on health literacy regarding sarcopenia among older adults revealed that 77.2% had never heard of sarcopenia, whereas 74.5% expressed willingness to learn about it. Additionally, our results showed that individuals who had previously heard of sarcopenia had a lower risk than those who had not (OR: 0.665, 95% CI: 0.525–0.841). Advanced age, malnutrition or risk of malnutrition, and physical activity were identified as independent factors for sarcopenia.</p> Conclusions <p>This study revealed a relatively high prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults. Multivariate analysis identified advanced age, lower BMI, at‑risk malnutrition, daily exercise, and having heard of sarcopenia as independent factors associated with sarcopenia. These findings underscore the importance of targeted screening and intervention for older adults with these risk factors, as well as public education to improve awareness of sarcopenia.</p>
